OREANDA-NEWS. June 18, 2008.  Tomorrow, June 19, President of the Republic of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus leaves for Brussels, Belgium, to attend European Council meetings.

The European Council set to meet Thursday and Friday will discuss the situation and the actions to be taken following Ireland’s rejection of the Lisbon Treaty in a referendum on 12 June 2008. Also, Slovakia will be congratulated on its integration into the euro zone from 2009.

Among other issues to be covered will be energy problems related to higher oil prices, and possible political solutions.
Heads of states and governments of the European Union are also going to address EU justice and internal issues and EU membership prospects of the Western Balkans. The EU’s external relations to be discussed at the European Council include the establishment of the Union for the Mediterranean and the strengthening of the eastern dimension of European neighbourhood policy.
