OREANDA-NEWS. April 21, 2009. The speech by the Russian President centred on the issues of European security.

Mr Medvedev noted Russia’s suggestion to make a major European agreement on security. Such agreement must be primarily based on the principle of the integrity of European security and acknowledge inseparability of security problems in some areas of Europe from the security on the entire European continent.

A forum of all Euro-Atlantic states and such international organisations as the European Union, NATO, OSCE, CSTO, and the CIS could be the platform to start a discussion on such new European security agreement.

Speaking of cooperation in the energy sector, Dmitry Medvedev noted the importance of joint efforts by Russia and its European partners in improving efficiency of energy consumption and reducing energy loss.

The President also expressed his hope that the process of Russia’s WTO accession may be intensified this year.
