OREANDA-NEWS. May 27, 2009. At South Korea's initiative, Dmitry Medvedev had a telephone conversation with President of the Republic of Korea Lee Myung-bak.

The two Presidents exchanged views on developments in events following North Korea’s nuclear test and other actions by Pyongyang that have led to an escalation in tension in Northeast Asia. Mr Lee assessed very positively the part Russia is playing as the country chairing the UN Security Council in discussing these issues at the Security Council.

Both leaders noted that North Korea’s nuclear test constitutes a direct violation of UN Security Council resolution 1718, and is counter to international law. Both Presidents stressed their countries’ intention to take an active part in drafting a new Security Council resolution on North Korea and continue close consultations with their partners in the six-party talks on resolving the North Korean nuclear problem.

Mr Medvedev and Mr Lee also discussed the timetable for planned top-level contacts.
