OREANDA-NEWS. June 03, 2009. On June 1, a telephone conversation between Russian Federation Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov and Minister of Foreign Affairs Yang Jiechi of the PRC took place at the Chinese side’s initiative. The interlocutors discussed a number of important aspects of bilateral relations, along with international problems, including the situation on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia in connection with the DPRK’s underground nuclear test on May 25 and with a draft resolution being worked out in the UNSC on this problem.

Lavrov and Jiechi expressed their common view about the need for a convincing response by the Security Council about the inadmissibility of ignoring UNSC decisions and the requirements of global WMD nonproliferation regimes. But they stressed that a solution to the problem is possible only along politico-diplomatic lines, including by the resumption of six-party talks as the major tool for the settlement of the Korean Peninsula nuclear problem and the alleviation of the DPRK’s legitimate security concerns.
