OREANDA-NEWS. June 23, 2009. Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov received on June 22 the co-chairs of the International Commission on Nuclear Nonproliferation and Disarmament, former Foreign Ministers of Australia and Japan Gareth Evans and Yoriko Kawaguchi.

Discussions at the meeting dealt with a broad range of issues related to the functioning of, and ways to further reinforce the nonproliferation regime in the context of the 2010 Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference.

The chief aim of the Commission is to devise a global nuclear security roadmap on three main NPT components: nonproliferation, disarmament, and the peaceful use of atomic energy.

Lavrov stressed that Russia welcomes any efforts aimed at reinforcing the NPT and contributing toward effective work of the 2010 Review Conference.
