OREANDA-NEWS. July 27, 2009. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Sergey Lavrov, paid an official visit to the Republic of Thailand on July 24 after the end of the Phuket ASEAN events.

As part of Lavrov’s stay in Bangkok, he had an audience with King Bhumibol Adulyadej and a meeting with Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva.

Wide-ranging issues in bilateral relations and regional and world politics were discussed during his talks with Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya, which passed in an atmosphere of trustfulness and mutual understanding.

The ministers devoted considerable attention to the prospects for continuing the buildup of political dialogue, reinvigorating economic and commercial cooperation, implementing concrete energy, science and technology, education, culture and tourism projects and broadening the juridical base of relations between the two countries. The importance of the upcoming 4th meeting of the Mixed Russia-Thailand Bilateral Cooperation Commission in late November in Bangkok was noted in this context.

The sides were pleased to note that Russia and Thailand’s approaches toward key problems of the contemporary international agenda, in particular, the creation of a more just and democratic world order based on the principles of multipolarity, the preservation and strengthening of the central role of the UN and the observance of the norms of international law, are close or coincide. They also voiced mutual interest in further strengthening the cooperation of the two countries in the context of their joint participation in various Asia-Pacific integrative mechanisms.

Lavrov and Piromya signed a Consultation Plan between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand for 2009-2011.

The Russian Foreign Minister invited his Thai counterpart to pay a visit to Moscow.

While staying in Bangkok, Sergey Lavrov delivered a lecture on “Russian-Thai Relations and Russian Asia-Pacific Policy” at Chulalongkorn University, Thailand’s oldest institution of higher learning.
