OREANDA-NEWS. September 16, 2009. The 64th session of the UN General Assembly opened in New York on September 15. Its agenda consists of over 160 items, on which the debate is to focus member states’ efforts to find optimal solutions to global challenges and problems facing the world community.

Amid a plethora of unresolved regional conflicts, the global financial and economic crisis stands out as an extra negative factor. In general, the whole system of international relations is now undergoing serious tests in the political, economic and financial fields.

We hope that the session will constitute an important step towards establishing a new world order based on collective underpinnings, the principles of equality and mutually beneficial cooperation and help shape a more equitable and stable architecture of international relations while respecting international law.

An important distinguishing feature of the UNGA session is that it will take place in the year of the 65th anniversary of Great Victory – the event that led to the birth of the world Organization and predetermined the course of world history thereafter.

On the first day of the general debate, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev will address the session. He is also scheduled to have bilateral conversations with a number of leaders of foreign states.
