OREANDA-NEWS. October 26, 2009. During their discussion the state leaders gave positive assessments of the expert consultations that recently concluded in Vienna between Russia, USA, France and Iran with the participation of the IAEA. Barack Obama noted that Russia plays a crucial role in ensuring a positive outcome for the talks. In turn, Dmitry Medvedev stressed the importance of the U.S. declaration of readiness to provide written guarantees for the arrangements proposed by Russia and the U.S. concerning the exchange of uranium for fuel for a research reactor.

The Russian and American presidents also discussed the progress of negotiations in Geneva to prepare a new document on strategic offensive armaments cuts. Dmitry Medvedev and Barack Obama expressed their satisfaction with the intensive dialogue carried out by the delegations of their countries and the current level of understanding.

In the presidents' opinion all this will facilitate the preparation of a comprehensive and legally binding treaty on strategic offensive arms by early December 2009. Further consultations at various levels will be held to achieve this goal.

Dmitry Medvedev once again congratulated Barack Obama, this time in person, on winning the Nobel Peace Prize.

The conversation was initiated by the American side.
