OREANDA-NEWS. February 24, 2010. The second consultative meeting on the preparations for the international conference on the disarmament issues in Central Asia and the Caspian Basin was conducted in Ashgabat. The representatives of the foreign ministries and diplomatic missions of Turkmenistan, the Azerbaijan Republic, the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Kyrgyz Republic, the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Republic of Tajikistan, the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Russian Federation.

This meeting was a new step to implement President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov’s initiative to hold the international forum on the disarmament issues in Central Asia and the Caspian Basin in 2010. As is known, the Turkmen leader put forward this initiative at the 64th session of the United Nations General Assembly last September.

In a businesslike and constructive atmosphere the sides exchanged views on the organizational and substantive aspects of the upcoming conference. In particular, the draft forum agenda, which would include such topics as the overview and analysis of the current disarmament situation in Central Asia and the Caspian Basin, the international regulatory framework on disarmament and improvement of relevant laws, the role of the international organisations in addressing disarmament problems at global and regional levels.

The meeting reaffirmed the interest of the Central Asian and Caspian states in the success of the international conference, which would become an effective factor in concerting global efforts to strengthen stability and security in the world.

The communique was adopted upon the results of the meeting.
