OREANDA-NEWS. June 17, 2010. Moscow hosted the 7th Meeting of Senior Officials of Russia and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Alexei Borodavkin headed the Russian delegation.

The focus of attention was questions of the content of the second Russia-ASEAN summit scheduled for October in Hanoi. An agreement was reached to adopt a Joint Leaders’ Statement at the end of the meeting at the highest level and to sign several documents aimed at development of political partnership and practical cooperation between Russia and ASEAN.

A detailed discussion took place on key issues of reinvigorating the Russia-ASEAN dialogue and guidelines for the further development of cooperation in such growth areas as energy, prevention and mitigation of natural disasters, science and technology, culture and tourism were outlined.

During the discussion on international and regional issues, special attention was devoted to creating a new architecture of security and cooperation in the AP region; overcoming the effects of the global financial crisis; forging multilateral collaboration in ensuring food and energy security, and waging a joint struggle against international terrorism, drug trafficking and transnational organized crime.

It was agreed to hold the next round of Russian-ASEAN political consultation in Myanmar in 2011.
