OREANDA-NEWS. October 28, 2010. Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov received on October 26 the IAEA Director General, Yukiya Amano, who is currently in Moscow to attend the 5th International Energy Week “Moscow Energy Dialogue.”

The parties discussed questions of cooperation between Russia and the Agency in the peaceful uses of atomic energy, and nuclear applications in science, medicine, industry and agriculture for the rational use of water resources and promotion of environmental protection.

Some issues on the international agenda in the field of nuclear non-proliferation, such as ensuring nuclear safety and security, preventing nuclear materials and technologies from falling into the hands of non-state actors as well as regional challenges to the nonproliferation regime were touched upon.

Sergey Lavrov reaffirmed the principled support by Russia of the IAEA as a unique international platform to exchange experiences, knowledge and achievements in the nuclear field for the benefit of all its member states, as well as an international body that has the necessary expertise base to ensure stable functioning of the nuclear non-proliferation regime.
