OREANDA-NEWS. June 28, 2011. Sergey Lavrov, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, received the visiting prominent Egyptian politician, former IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei on June 27.

During their meeting they discussed the state of and prospects for the development of the sociopolitical situation in Egypt, especially in the context of the profound social, economic and political transformations occurring in the country.

Sergey Lavrov spoke in support of the steps being undertaken by the Egyptian leadership to stabilize the situation and exit the crisis, which find broad support among the various segments of the population. The Minister expressed his confidence that the domestic political problems of Egypt, however acute, can and should be tackled by peaceful means, through national dialogue and on the basis of public consensus regarding the nature and content of the reforms.

Mohamed ElBaradei shared his assessments of the situation in Egypt, specifically reiterating his personal disposition to continue actively facilitating democratic processes in the country.

Both sides emphasized their desire to comprehensively strengthen and expand the full range of Russian-Egyptian relations, which have reached the level of genuine partnership in recent years.
