OREANDA-NEWS. The EU foreign ministers could not agree on the list of Belarusian officials against whom Brussels intends to impose sanctions. The decision was blocked by Cyprus, which requires the imposition of sanctions against Turkey because of its activities in the Mediterranean.

The position of Cyprus has not changed, so the ministers were unable to agree on the blacklist, and the question is now shifting to a summit scheduled for the end of this week, the source of TASS news agency said. On Friday there was the last meeting of the ambassadors, which also ended in nothing, so it was predictable that there would be no agreement at the meeting on Monday.

Josep Borrell, High Representative of the EU, explained that it was not possible to agree on sanctions against Belarus because there was no unanimous decision. At the same time, according to him, all the heads of the EU foreign ministries consider the election in Belarus falsified. Borrell added that ministers are calling for new fair election under the supervision of experts of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.
