OREANDA-NEWS. Social Democratic politician Olaf Scholz was elected the new Federal Chancellor of Germany on Wednesday, December 8. 395 Bundestag deputies voted in support of Angela Merkel's successor, who headed the German government for the past 16 years.
According to article 63 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Chancellor is elected by the Parliament — the Bundestag — following the results of parliamentary elections and is proposed for approval by the federal President. The one who gets the majority of votes of deputies — at least 369 — is elected. Scholz won thanks to the support not only from his own Social Democratic Party of Germany, but also from the Greens and the Free Democratic Party. It is these three political forces that form the new ruling coalition in Germany.

During the election campaign, Scholz was often criticized for his lack of charisma. According to a survey conducted by the YouGov sociological institute, almost two-thirds of Germans do not think that Scholz will stay as chancellor for more than four years.

According to the survey data released on December 8, 20 percent of respondents believe that the three-party coalition led by Scholz will break up before the next Bundestag elections. Another 44 percent believe that Scholz will stay in power for all four years, but will not be re-elected again. And only 1.3 percent of respondents believe in Stolz so much that they believe that he will remain in power for as long as his predecessor Angela Merkel — 16 years.

Olaf Scholz will become the ninth Chancellor of Germany. The politician was born in 1958 in Osnabrück, studied law, did alternative military service and worked as a lawyer. Scholz was twice a member of the Bundestag - from 1998 to 2001 and from 2002 to 2011. From 2007 to 2009, he served as Minister of Labor in the Government of Germany, from 2011 to 2018 he was the first Mayor of Hamburg, and since March 2018 he has been in charge of the Ministry of Finance of Germany and at the same time served as Vice-Chancellor.
