OREANDA-NEWS. The Assembly of the Portuguese Republic voted in favor the permission of euthanasia in some cases with observance of strict rules.

Five bills related to this topic were submitted to the parliament; they received from 124 to 127 votes out of 230. Draft laws approved by the deputies provide that euthanasia can be committed only if a patient is 18 years old, if he does not suffer from a mental illness, and if he has to endure unbearable pain in the absence of hope for a cure.

Protests against the legalization of euthanasia were held in front of the parliament building.

In 2018, the Portuguese parliament already voted on this issue, and the opponents of euthanasia won by two votes.

Euthanasia is legalized in several countries, including Belgium, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Canada and Colombia.
