OREANDA-NEWS. Russian Ambassador in Tallinn, Alexander Petrov, has been summoned to the Foreign Ministry of Estonia.

Earlier, the Russian Embassy published on its Facebook page a commentary by the Information and Press Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry in connection with the 80th anniversary of the accession of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia to the USSR. The agency noted that the entry of the Baltic states “was not unilateral and occurred by mutual agreement.” In June 1940, Moscow, with the approval of the leadership of the republics, was forced to deploy troops on their territory due to the military threat posed by Nazi Germany. Russian diplomats emphasized that this step was legitimate and did not mean that the Baltic countries would lose their sovereignty.

After that, Estonian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Urmas Reinsalu, stated at a press conference that the country did not voluntarily join the Soviet Union. He added that such statements of the Russian diplomatic mission “do not benefit bilateral relations" and added that he had ordered to summon the Russian Ambassador and express a protest to him.
