OREANDA-NEWS. The People’s Council of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) established the status of Russian as the only official language in the Constitution. The head of the DPR Denis Pushilin made a proposal, and the deputies unanimously voted for it.

Until now, there have been two state languages in the republic: Russian and Ukrainian. However, as they note in the parliament, “the use of Ukrainian as the state language still has not found practical implementation.”

In addition, the parliamentarians unanimously voted for amendments to the law on education, according to which school pupils will be taught in Russian. “At the same time, students will be able to receive pre-school, primary general and basic general education in their native language at the request of their parents,” Aleksey Sukhinin, the representative of the DPR head at the People’s Council, explained.
