OREANDA-NEWS. Germany, from which Alexei Navalny flew to Russia the day before, reacted to his arrest only the next day. In this regard, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas repeated the call of other countries to release him.

The Russian Foreign Ministry had previously advised foreign politicians commenting on the situation with Navalny to respect international law and deal with the problems of their countries.

On the wanted list in his homeland, Navalny returned to Russia from Germany on January 17. He was detained at the airport, the FSIN reported. The further measure of restraint for Navalny will be determined by the court, until the court's decision he will be in custody, the department noted.

According to a statement on Twitter of the German Foreign Ministry, "The detention of Alexei Navalny is completely inexplicable. The principles of the rule of law and the protection of civil rights, which Russia is obliged to follow within the framework of the constitution and international obligations, must be applied to his case. Navalny must be immediately released."

The representatives of the US State Department, the head of the European Council Charles Michel, leaders and foreign ministers of a number of European countries, for example, Finland asked to release Navalny the day before.

The official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Maria Zakharova advised foreign politicians who comment on the situation around Navalny to respect international law, not to encroach on the national legislation of sovereign states and deal with problems in their countries.
