OREANDA-NEWS. Both Ukraine and Russia are responsible for providing the Republic of Crimea with drinking water. This was stated by Elizabeth Throssell, the official representative of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

According to her, the right to safe and clean drinking water and sanitation is recognized by the UN General Assembly as one of the human rights necessary for a full life and the full enjoyment of all human rights. The main responsibility for providing the inhabitants of the peninsula with access to water was assigned to Russia. At the same time, Kiev should support the implementation of economic, social and cultural rights of the Crimeans.

Earlier, Natalya Poklonskaya, deputy head of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, said that the UN High Commissioner had requested additional information on the water supply to Crimea in response to her letter, in which she urged to condemn the actions of Kiev, which cut off the supply of fresh water to the region, and to take measures to resume water supply through the North Crimean canal.
