OREANDA-NEWS. The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted in a first reading a bill according to which the number of deputies of the parliament should be reduced from 450 to 300. 236 deputies voted for the bill, 40 voted against, and 86 abstained.

The bill, which contains amendments to the 76th and 77th articles of the Constitution of Ukraine, was introduced by President Volodymyr Zelensky. The draft law also states the Verkhovna Rada is elected according to proportional election system. This means that deputy mandates are distributed between the lists of candidates in proportion to the votes cast for these lists. Now the national one-chamber parliament is elected in accordance with mixed proportional and majority system. 225 deputies are elected by party lists in the all-Ukrainian constituency, and 225 parliamentarians are elected by the majority system in single-seat electoral districts.
