OREANDA-NEWS. January 23, 2017. The ethics of research when it involves human subjects will be the topic of discussion Monday, Jan. 23, for the third talk in the 2016-2017 Seminar Series hosted by the Office of Research Integrity (ORI) within the Department of Research and Economic Development. The series, in its second year, focuses on ethical dilemmas and research topics that involve human subjects.

The Jan. 23 event will begin with a screening of “Experimenter: The Stanley Milgram Story.” The film is based on the true story of famed social psychologist Stanley Milgram, who in 1961 conducted a series of radical behavior experiments at Yale University that tested the willingness of ordinary humans to obey an authority figure while administering electric shocks to strangers.

Following the screening, there will be a discussion addressing questions about experimental design and ethics of research by UCR psychology faculty members. Confirmed for the discussion are Carolyn Miller, and Robert Rosenthal (who knew Stanley Milgram). ORI is teaming with the UCR International Psychology Honor Society – Psi Chi – to host the event.

“Experimenter” will be screened at 6:15 p.m. in Bourns Hall B118. The seminar is free, and open to the public, but seating is limited. Light refreshments will be served.
