OREANDA-NEWS.Engineers from the institutes of Munich and Braunschweig have developed a system of automatic landing of aircraft in small airports - now it works only in large airports.

As the aircraft approaches the airport, image processing software analyzes the video from the cameras, determining where the aircraft is located relative to the runway. Combined with GPS data, this information is used by the aircraft's autopilot to direct it to land safely.

The system has already passed field tests and will soon be introduced by German airlines that fly to small airports.
