OREANDA-NEWS. Latvia has come out on top in the world in the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 per million inhabitants, according to a study conducted by Johns Hopkins University (USA).

The data on the incidence of coronavirus in Latvia was published on Monday by the chief epidemiologist of the Latvian Center for Disease Prevention and Control Yuri Perevoshchikov on his Facebook page.

"World anti-records", - he wrote, having published a screenshot of data from Johns Hopkins University, where Latvia ranks first.

According to the screenshot, Latvia, as of October 17, is in the lead with 7679.97 cases of coronavirus infection per million population per week. It is followed by Barbados - 7125, 28 cases and Georgia - 7106, 18 cases.

In Latvia, more than 2,000 new cases of COVID-19 are recorded every day with a population of 1.8 million people. The country has an emergency regime. On Monday, on the initiative of Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins, an emergency meeting of the Crisis Management Council was convened, at which new restrictions will be considered.

At the same time, the number of coronavirus infections is growing in Russia. The number of cases of COVID-19 detected in Russia is updated for a maximum of the fifth day in a row, follows from the data of the operational headquarters. "Over the past 24 hours, there have been 34,325 confirmed cases of new coronavirus infection in 85 regions, including 2,821 (8.2 percent) actively detected without clinical manifestations," the statement said.
