OREANDA-NEWS   Undernourishment interferes with the proper functioning of the immune system and is known to make bigger the risk of serious infections. In a new study, researchers examined the link between a diagnosis of undernourishment and the subsequent severity of COVID-19 using medical records of 8,604 children and 94,495 adults who were taken to hospital with COVID-19 between March and June 2020.

Of 520 (6%) children with severe coronavirus, 39 (7.5%) were previously malnourished, compared with 125 (1.5%) of 7,959 (98.45%) children with mild COVID-19. For adults, of 11,423 (11%) with severe coronavirus, 453 (4%) had a previous diagnosis of malnutrition, compared with 1,557 (1.8%) of 81,515 (98.13%) adults with mild disease.

According to the authors, support measures need to be developed for populations which are vulnerable to malnutrition. This will reduce the increased risk of severe infection and death from the coronavirus.
