OREANDA-NEWS. The Brazilian strain of the coronavirus "gamma" is not as dangerous as the Indian version, said the head of the Department of Microbiology, Virology and Immunology of I.M. Sechenov Vitaly Zverev in an interview with "Lenta.ru".

According to the expert, the Brazilian strain is the most similar to the British one. At the same time, its mutations are not as serious as in the Indian version, and vaccines should cope with it.

The scientist urged not to panic over the discovery of a new variant of the pathogen, since the risk that it will replace the variants that are already circulating in Russia is small. "In theory, he should not bring anything new to the clinic, or to diagnostics, or to treatment, or to prevention," Zverev summed up.

Earlier, the media, citing representatives of the Vector Center, reported that isolated cases of infection with the Brazilian strain of coronavirus were detected in Russia.

The Research Center "Vector" noted that "gamma", like the Indian strain "delta", is more infectious. Corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, head of the laboratory of biotechnology and virology at the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Novosibirsk State University Sergei Netesov said that, unlike the Indian version, the Brazilian strain does not pose a particular danger. The doctor of sciences urged to fight precisely with the "delta" - according to him, most of those infected are sick with it.

If this is indeed a Brazilian strain, then it poses no significant danger. It is comparable to the delta strain. And the vaccine protects well against it.

“The only thing is that the Brazilian strain reproduces a little faster than the original Wuhan version. Now the most dangerous option that exists in the world is still a “delta”, ”added the doctor of biological sciences.
