OREANDA-NEWS GMT development is an international initiative. The creators of the telescope report that after it is put into operation, it will be able to provide 10 times more clear image in comparison with the Hubble. Scientists also hope to get answers to other important questions with it.

But the construction of such a telescope is a very difficult task. In many ways, the complexity of the assembly is associated with mirrors. Each primary segment should have a thickness of about one millionth of an inch. So, the installation process of the second segment took almost seven years from the developers.

But now, thanks to the latest developments by scientists from the University of Arizona, the GMT team hopes to accelerate the process of polishing the front surface of the remaining parts of the mirror. Therefore, with the installation of the remaining segments, the creators of the telescope intend to cope by 2027.
