German Politician Urged Borrel to Stand Up for Navalny During his Visit to Moscow
OREANDA-NEWS. The expert of the «Free Democratic Party» Alexander Graf Lambsdorff called on the EU High Representative for Foreign Policy and Security Josep Borrel during his visit to Moscow to convey to the Russian authorities «a clear message from Brussels».
«The European Union cannot tolerate the fact that Russia's actions against Navalny violate the human and civil rights enshrined in the Russian Constitution and violate the norms of international law», he said in an interview with the «DPA news agency», published on Friday, February 5. According to Lambsdorff, the violent actions against the demonstrators must be stopped immediately. Otherwise, the threat of expanding EU sanctions against specific individuals will remain.
He called on Borrel to meet in Moscow not only with Russian authorities, but also with supporters of Alexei Navalny and representatives of the opposition, and thus support the competitiveness in Russian politics.
Josep Borrel meets with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Moscow on February 5. This is the first visit of the head of European diplomacy to the Russian capital in almost four years. During a long-planned meeting with Lavrov, Borrel intends to once again demand the release of Navalny.
