OREANDA-NEWS. Next week, the United States will present to the UN Security Council a draft resolution to extend the arms embargo on Iran. This was announced by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, speaking at a press briefing.

“The Council would make an absolute mockery of that mission if it allowed the number-one state sponsor of terrorism to buy and sell weapons freely,” the politician said. He added that a vote is expected next week.

According to the head of the American diplomacy, if the resolution is vetoed, the United States will unilaterally seek an extension of the arms embargo. The American side believes that the resolution 2231 of 2015 lifted many UN sanctions, but also created a legal mechanism that is intended to be applied by this or that country in order to resume the sanctions, and the arms embargo is one of such restrictions. “And the proposal we put forward is eminently reasonable. One way or another – one way or another, we will do the right thing. We will ensure that the arms embargo is extended,” Pompeo said.
