OREANDA-NEWS. Former presidential candidate of Belarus Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya will speak via video link in front of the members of the European Parliament on August 25.

The press release clarifies that parliamentarians will discuss the latest developments in Belarus after the presidential elections held on August 9. According to the media, the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the European Parliament will hold an extraordinary meeting on the situation in Belarus on August 25, and Helga Schmid, Secretary General of the European External Actions Service, will also take part in the discussion.

On August 9, mass protests began after the presidential election in Belarus. According to the Central Election Commission, the current head of state Alexander Lukashenko won, gaining 80.08 % of votes, while opposition candidate Tsikhanouskaya was supported by 10.09 % of citizens. The European Union claimed that it does not recognize the election results and is preparing sanctions against Belarusian officials.
