OREANDA-NEWS. The authorities of the United States intend to tighten sanctions against the Syrian Arab Republic in order to change power in the country.

This was reported by the newspaper New York Times. According to the publication, officials from the White House are planning to introduce new restrictions against Syria. These sanctions were included in the military budget for fiscal year 2020. It is also mentioned that Washington is ready to carry out sanctions pressure on Damascus until the change of power in the country.

At the same time, the newspaper notes that a number of experts question the effectiveness of this approach. In their opinion, sanctions alone are not enough to put pressure on Syria, since they worsen the life of the population, but not the authorities. The article quotes the words of Basma Aloush, an adviser for the Norwegian Refugee Council, an international non-profit organization. “It’s a double-edged sword. If the U.S. is using such sweeping, vast sanctions to yield some kind of political goal, they’re not paying enough attention to the unintended consequences,” she stated.
