OREANDA-NEWS. October 6, 2009. An international scientific practical center of thyroid diseases will be set up in Belarus. The project is part of the joint initiative of the European Commission and UNDP and is aimed at minimizing the Chernobyl consequences in Belarus.

The budget is estimated at EUR 1.13 million. The UNDP will allocate EUR 63,000, EC - more than EUR 1 million.

The center will be set up with the participation of the Health Ministry of Belarus and the Arnika international fund “Helping people with radio-induced thyroid cancer”. The partners of the organization are the republican center of medical rehabilitation and balneology, unified institute of informatics of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, Belarusian medical academy of post-graduate education, Belarusian Red Cross Society, republican center of thyroid tumors (Minsk) and the republican scientific practical center of radiation medicine and human ecology (Gomel). The international partner is the Clinic for Nuclear Medicine at the University of Wurzburg (Germany).

The center will be located in Minsk. It is expected to provide services to more than 5,000 young patients who need special rehabilitation to preserve fertility and who receive thyroid cancer treatment. The center will be able to receive around 15,000 patients with other thyroid gland diseases.
