OREANDA-NEWS. May 29, 2012. Border guards must work to improve the safety of the state border of Ukraine, while making border crossing as comfortable as possible, President Viktor Yanukovych said during his today’s visit to Bortnychi border guard camp.

"You must increase state border security. However, and it is my principled position, you must also protect the interests of law-abiding citizens of both Ukraine and other countries, for whom the border should remain transparent, and its crossing – convenient and comfortable," he said.

President Yanukovych expressed confidence that it is also necessary to strengthen the fight against international criminal groups. "The Border Guard Service shares a significant part of responsibility in fighting against drug trafficking, illegal arms trafficking, proliferation of radioactive and other hazardous materials, illegal migration," said Viktor Yanukovych.

Besides, the President drew attention to the need to fight corruption actively. "Corruption in the border guards’ ranks, as well as other law enforcement agencies, is a very dangerous threat to national interests," he said.
