OREANDA-NEWS. July 8, 2009. On the instructions of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov Speaker of the Mejlis A. Nurberdyeva received the credential letters of Jelica Kurjak, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Serbia to Turkmenistan.

On behalf of the President of Turkmenistan the head of the national Parliament congratulated the guest on the appointment to the high post and wished success in enhancing the ties of friendship and fruitful cooperation between the two states. Thanking for the heartfelt wished the diplomat conveyed the cordial greetings and best wishes of President of the Republic of Serbia Boris Tadic to the Turkmen leader.

The diplomat noted that she considered it an honour to represent her country in Turkmenistan – the state which had gained the impressive economic achievements in a short period of time. Highly appreciating Turkmenistan’s peacemaking initiatives Ms. Jelica Kurjak emphasized that the neutral status of the country promote establishing the good neighbourly relations with different countries worldwide and stood as an essential factor for maintaining stability in the region.

During the meeting the Speaker of the Mejlis briefed the guest, who had arrived in Ashgabat for the first time, on the major trends in Turkmenistan’s domestic and foreign policies, the ongoing large-scale projects and development programme in different sectors of the national economy. The conversation focused on the activities of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan, its role and contribution to the democratic processes and reforms taking place in the country. In this regard the sides called for establishing close inter-parliamentary contacts as an indissoluble component of constructive collaboration.

Focusing with satisfaction on mutual interest in strengthening the intergovernmental dialogue the sides stated that there were the profound potential and conditions conducive for effective cooperation. In this context emphasis was put on intensification of trade and economic contacts in such a very promising sector as agriculture. Focusing on importance of humanitarian cooperation the sides called for establishing scientific and cultural exchange. In particular, Ms. Jelica Kurjak put forward the proposal to hold the Days of Serbian Cinematography in Turkmenistan and the Days of Turkmen Cinematography in Serbia.

Thanking for the heartfelt welcome the Ambassador said that she would spare no effort to further intensify Turkmen-Serbian cooperation. In conclusion the sides expressed belief that in the near future this cooperation would be brought up to a higher level meeting mutual potential and interests.
