OREANDA-NEWS. The issue of banning communist symbols in the European Union was raised in the European Parliament after the installation of a monument to the revolutionist, founder of Soviet Russia, Vladimir Lenin, in Germany.

On June 20, in the city of Gelsenkirchen, on the initiative of the Marxist–Leninist Party of Germany, a two-meter statue of Lenin was erected.

Elzbieta Kruk appealed to the European Commission on this matter. The document calls Lenin a criminal, responsible for the deaths of up to 6 million people. The Polish politician expressed indignation with the fact that the Soviet leader is being honoured in democratic Germany.

Kruk refers to the resolution of the European Parliament of 2019, which calls for the condemnation of Nazism, Stalinism and “other totalitarian and authoritarian regimes.” She asked if the members of the European Commission do not think that communist symbols should be banned in the EU. Kruk also asked whether the Commission will take any steps to remove the monument to Lenin erected in Gelsenkirchen.
