OREANDA-NEWS. Haitian President Jovenel Moise could have been robbed, since the country has a high level of crime, but most likely his opposition opponents are involved in the incident. This opinion was expressed by the head of the Center for Political Studies of the Institute of Latin America of the Russian Academy of Sciences Zbigniew Ivanovsky in an interview with a correspondent of Russian media «Lenta.Ru».

«There is a very difficult situation here. Haiti is a very poor country. There was an earthquake in 2010, it is still in ruins. This is a very corrupt country, and besides, they still have a political crisis», — the expert recalled.

According to him, the opposition believed that President Moise should have left office on February 7, 2021, and the politician himself wanted to leave in February 2022. According to the laws of the country, the head of state cannot be elected for a second term. However, Moise decided to change the constitution. Mass protests swept through the country when it became known about the decision of the politician. The opposition demanded to call new elections, but he ignored all the demands.

«He did not suit his citizens. There were protests, there were dissatisfactions.<...> Since the country is very poor, criminal and uncontrolled, it cannot be completely excluded that it was robbery, but most likely it was his political opponents», — Ivanovsky said. The expert recalled that over the past 35 years, 20 governments have changed in Haiti.

On the night of July 7, unknown attackers shot dead the President of Haiti, Jovenel Moise. Later, his wife died in the hospital. It is known that some of the group of attackers spoke Spanish, although the official language in the country is French.
