OREANDA-NEWS American researchers said they were able to slow the development of scrapie in laboratory mice — prion infection, which leads to premature death. Experts believe that their method will save the brain from inevitable death.

A large-scale study was undertaken by researchers at the National Institutes of Health in the United States. To obtain confirmation of the effectiveness of recently found methods, experts conducted a series of experiments with laboratory rodents. They used antisense oligonucleotides — short RNA molecules that prevent protein synthesis by joining matrix RNA according to the principle of complementarity. Molecules were injected into the cerebrospinal fluid of mice.

As a result, the molecules showed their effectiveness. The life of mice became almost twice as long as it could be without the intervention of specialists.
